Light It Up Blue for Autism

Autism is not something I ever thought I would understand personally.  I studied the Autism Spectrum Disorder in school as part of my education degree but it was only facts I may need to use with student.

Then I met George* in the foreign language elective I was teaching.  He wasn’t required to be there.  He had Asperger’s Syndrome and could opt out of all electives.  But he was interested in other countries and languages.  He couldn’t get enough.  He learned more in an 8 week elective than some AP Spanish students.  He was determined and I was so proud.

In seminary I met Tim* who was only 3 years old.  He was interested in super heros and cartoons but not my Sunday school lessons.  Smile  The one lesson he taught me most was to invite him to play and join in with us.  Many Sundays he’d be intrigued and come sit down – for a few minutes at least.  He is such a vibrant young boy now who still doesn’t always want to spend time with me but I invite him anyway.

My Brother-in-law is 35 year-old with Autism.  When he grew up the word autism was rarely used or understood.  Cory* couldn’t explain how he felt either.  One fact is his great love of family.  Hunni knows Cory loves him even if he’s never said the words.  He doesn’t like new people but when Hunni introduced me Cory said hello and waved before going back to his room.  Later that week we went to the movies and dinner.  I smile knowing he likes me even if I may never hear the words.

Today is World Wide Autism Day.  We all deserve a better understand; a better diagnosis; and a better treatment.  Check our my friend Ryan’s post as a father of a son with Autism.  We can’t these things individually but we can bring awareness that Autism isn’t just a disorder…Autism is about people

Last Week’s Goals

  • Reset tech-free.  Movie night was fantastic for this.  After work Hunni had already looked up movie times and whisked me off to see The Hunger Games…again.  It was his first time and now he’s intrigued to read the books so we have reading time instead of re-watching TV shows.
  • Basic meal list.  I made one…on paper.  That doesn’t help much if I lose the paper.  I’m in the process of making it a Google doc so I can access whenever, wherever.  But it’s nice to have an idea for meals that don’t involve running to the co-op hot bar.
  • Get in the fitness. Holy moly!  I killed myself this week.  I think not having enough time to do my regular workouts but wanting my reward – a book – pushed me to work harder.  Now don’t make me laugh or my abs will hurt.
  • Edit YouTube VideoI wanted to kill iMovie on my iPhone.  I did one entire edit while waiting for an appointment…and then my phone ate it. GRRR!  Instead I re-did it on the computer and it turned out fine.  So I only have one completely finished and the other is in process…going up on Wed or Thursday.
  • Organize tasks/lists.  I love Astrid.  This app knows me and my love for organization.  I don’t think I’ve even scratched the surface of what it can do but I’m in love.  I make lists for fun…although I already did that too Smile
  • Pack up winter.  My drawers look so empty now.  I did a clothing trade with friends for some of the things that didn’t fit, donated some others and packed the rest away.  I guess I can go shopping now Winking smile.

This Week’s Goals

  • Holy Week Celebrations.  This week is one of most important celebrations.  I’m blessed to not only participate but lead these services.  It will be busy and add extra work but I’m more excited than anxious.
  • Visit with old friends.  Well not friends who are old…we’re just older than the last time we saw each other.  I’m excited she’s visiting this area of the country and we can spend a bit of time together.
  • Set health goals.  I’m challenging myself for the next 90 day with a group of good friends…but I need the challenges to strive for.  I want SMART goals and rewards.  Since getting back on track I’ve done well and I’m ready to kick it in gear.
  • Stock the fridge.  The pantry and freezer are filled of good food but that all needs to be cooked.  This week’s grocery list is filled with fresh produce and dairy to enjoy on the spur of the moment.
  • Kick my butt.  I love Zumba and have cut back on running so I’ve been looking for different ways to get in a great workout that fit into my schedule.  Circuit training is one of my favorites and read about the Nike Training Club app on Shape.com.  Oh my…it kicked my butt.  I’m ready to keep going.
  • Read and relax.  After busting my butt for the month of March to be more accountable for my health I earned a reward.  I bought a new book.  Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs was recommended by a friend and I’m excited to start reading it after hearing what inspired him to write it.
