Hi, My name is Laura from Joyful Shimmy and I write about my experiences facing my fears, having fun as I incorporate a balanced lifestyle. Thank you Cynthia for letting me do a guest post on one of my favorite subjects regarding resolutions.
Resolutions that Stick
It’s that time of the year, where we promise ourselves this year “I am going to lose weight“, “I will pay down my credit card debt” or my favorite this year was“I will be more patient”. January 1 comes and despite our great intentions by the end of the day we fall back into familiar patterns and behavior.
This past year I made a conscious commitment to do things differently. Hey as Einstein said “the definition of insanity is doing the same action and expecting different results.” This year I kept it simple as my resolution will be to face my fears head on. By the end of the year, I have performed in a burlesque show, made new friends, took barre classes, started a new business and most importantly I feel confident that I can tackle whatever I set forth in my path.
Here are my top 3 tips that i learned in helping you create a resolution that sticks.
1. Keep it Simple! Don’t fall into the trap of making a grandiose complicated plan that will leave you overwhelmed. Develop a resolution that is simple and manageable yet stretches you a bit further from your comfort zone. Keeping it simple doesn’t mean it will be easy to do, however it will help you follow through the plan.
2. Make time to brainstorm do-able action steps. Just as important as coming up with the resolution, it is just as important giving yourself time to brainstorm what actions can I take that will bring me closer to my resolution. If you want to lose 10 pounds, this may mean writing a food journal, adding 2 more vegetables to my daily intake. It’s the small actions that do add up in the long term. Think of this process like training for a marathon. It’s going to take some time but you can do it.
3. Support system. Get yourself a F.I.R.E. posse! Fabulous friends who are inspiring, reliable and eager to see me succeed. You are truly not alone in this journey. I encourage you to connect with other like-minded individuals whether through the blogosphere, in your community, at the gym, etc. Not only they will inspire you to continue to move forward they will also celebrate with you your victories.
