Kelly is the knitting master in Wisconsin…at least that’s my name for her. She writes at Brownies and Zucchini as she tries recipes for ease and and to suit her admitted pickiness. Also her pets Olive and Sasha are adorable.

When Cynthia asked me to write a guest post for her during the holiday season, I was excited because I love the holidays (well, and because Cynthia is pretty awesome
) but I had no idea what to write about. There were just so many possibilities that I was having a hard time narrowing it down. Then I thought about how I spend my holidays, and all of the traditions that are done. When I was growing up, we had many Christmas traditions. One that stood out to me was the cinnamon rolls.

Every year on Christmas Eve, my Dad, Mom, Brother and I would gather in the kitchen and make cinnamon rolls. The recipe wasn’t anything fancy – just the one from the back of the Bisquick box. However, it was the tradition, and the family time that mattered. We didn’t make cinnamon rolls more than a few times a year, but Christmas time was the most special time.
We always made multiple batches to make sure that there were enough for us to enjoy, as well as plenty to give to others. On Christmas Eve night, or sometimes Christmas morning, my parents, along with my brother and I, would go to a few of our close neighbors and drop off fresh, delicious, cinnamon rolls.
Through the years of doing this, I learned a few things:
- Baking and cooking with family is a learning experience. What you are learning from the experience changes as you grow older, but there is always room for more.
- Giving is good. This is something that my family has always instilled on me through this Christmas giving, and other volunteering and donation projects. The smiles on the neighbors faces enhanced the Christmas spirit that was already in the air.
- Cinnamon rolls are delicious…even if they aren’t from a fancy recipe.

We don’t do this anymore, as my brother and I now live away from home, but my parents do still bring treats to their neighbors. We definitely still do some traditions that we did while we were growing up, and some have been eliminated or changed. I’m a firm believer that traditions are what make the holidays special. Birthdays, Christmas, 4th of Jul,, they all count. Since our lives are always changing, these traditions give us something to hold on to. They help us remember the past, and give us something to look forward to in the future.
