Top 10 Things My Allergies Want You to Know

  1. They worry you more than me.  I live with allergies daily so I’m used to ‘em. Don’t worry about things you don’t understand, just ask questions…I’m happy to answer.
  2. I don’t miss bread. Really I don’t.  I rarely ate it, so I don’t miss it.  The rare times I do are peanut butter toast before a run or when the only decent vegetarian option is a sandwich.  IMG_4427
  3. Dessert is still my weakness.  I can’t eat traditional desserts but I want them.  I now work harder to adapt healthy-for-me recipes at home.  I’d rather spend 10 hours modifying a fantastic scone than 2 hours modifying a black bean burger.  The saying goes…sugar and spice and everything nice…that’s what girls are made of. Open-mouthed smile
  4. My grocery budget went DOWN!  IMG_4594 I limit store-bought gluten-free items to a few treats I really want; most have soy anyway.  Grinding grain, using bulk bins, and making things from scratch save the big bucks and extra pennies.  Making things ahead in larger quantities, like bean burgers is another favorite.  I need a chest freezer but for now I borrow space in the church freezer. Winking smile
  5. I can eat more than you think. Looking what I can eat it doesn’t seem like a lot.  Yet my tastes and food combinations show different. IMG_5313 My cabinet has more ingredients I’ve yet to think of ways to explore new ideas and cuisine.
  6. I love flavor and food. Food allergies doesn’t mean boring food.  Don’t be afraid to give it some spice.  Ask my friends…my Epi-pen is always nearby, just in case.  I’m not looking to eat allergens but I’m prepared for an oops.
  7. I dream of things I’ve yet to try instead of things I miss.  What good is it to look back at grandma’s apple dumplings or my Senora’s arroz con dulce de leche?  It only makes me sad and angry at a situation I can’t control. IMG_0387Instead, I dream of things seen but never tasted.  Foods heard of but never crossed my lips or may exist only in my dreams.
  8. Only jealous of the “this is soooo good” look on your faceYou know the look.  Teisha eating French lemon pastries “purer than real lemons” or Hunni tasting wedding cake giggling from first bite.  Momma’s perfected cat who stole the canary look. IMG_4093 I’m jealous I can’t have a bite which sent you to foodie heaven but happy I’m not in tasting which sends my stomach to hell.
  9. Invite me; even if I can’t join in the food or drinkI’m okay with it…I’m used to it.  I enjoy company of friends more than food. If I wanted company of food I’d stay home with a box of gluten-free donuts.  I like y’all and will bring snacks to share…maple donuts are fantastic year-round.IMG_2318
  10. I’m not dead yetYou think you’d DIE if you couldn’t eat {fill in the blank} but you’d be okay.  Thing is, if I eat it I’m in pain for a long time.  I’ll keep my opinions on your triple cheese burger to myself and if you let me enjoy my black bean burger without comment. IMG_3457
