How to Survive Long Car Trips

And I’m off again.

You think I’d be tired of driving after Baltimore, Central PA, Boston twice, and Old Orchard Beach, Maine in the span of 2 weeks.  Oh no…I’m off to Boston again.

Most of my driving is for work but it’s not all bad. I’ve devised an awesome survival plan to make any trip bearable and maybe even fun.

  • A GPS is a must. Nuvi is my constant companion even with her silly British accent.  IMG_2948She gives all the orders but if she “recalculates” too much, I switch her to Swahili.

  • Snack Kit. Being vegetarian, gluten-free and lactose intolerant leaves very little I can buy on the road.  I can easily say Burger King does NOT make it my way.  Instead I stop by the local grocery or co-op before leaving to stock up.

Besides I can pick much more interesting if I pack it.  IMG_3155IMG_2958IMG_3115IMG_3112

  • Go-go Juice. I am a camel and don’t like stopping to buy something to drink.  Instead I stock up on agua, some coffee and well…a good juice.

  • Entertain Me! If Hunni accompanies me I bug him until he falls asleep…then I listen to books on CD…cdor practice random skills, like hands-free cherry stem tying…I guess I’m a good kisser.

  • Laugh myself silly. My camera has a self timer and an awesome tripod allowing me to take funny pictures.  downsized_0504111150IMG_2950
I’m rolling with laughter when I reach my destination…looking at them while driving would be bad news.

  • Relive High School. The stations playing “80’s, 90’s and Today” are reliving my youth.  Screeching singing along with Goo Goo Dolls, Nirvana, Sheryl Crow and even Back Street Boys and New Kids on the Block make me wish for days of Mickey Mouse Club instead of Jersey Shore. IMG_1741

These and many more silly things keep my mind occupied instead of dreading each trip.  Sometimes when my book on CD is really good I actually long for more car time…but only sometimes.

After this trip my ankle I’m looking forward to resting…at least for a few days.  Here’s hoping no more surprise trips are on the horizon.

Do you enjoy long car trips? How to you stay occupied?
