Climb Every Mountain

How do you solve a problem like….Cynthia?  Today I was Maria from The Sound of Music. I was determined to climb a mountain.

The Hills are Alive!

Hunni and I decided to advantage of the beautiful but not too hot weather and the lack of rain that seems to be coming this weekend and hike at Mt. Greylock.  We have lived here for almost 2 years and everyone keeps telling us we should go.  Hikers come from all over to hike Mt. Greylock and we’d never been so today was our day.

Just look at the view.

There are several trails but we decided to take the easiest route today…I didn’t want to have to tell Boot Camp Steve I fell off a mountain today.

Which way do we go?

The idea of the Cliff Loop did not excite me.  I don’t want to be near any cliffs unless I’m jumping off them into water like I did in college in Portugal.  That’s a fun story for another time.  But the trail was beautiful and we had a blast climbing hills and trying not to trip over sticks.

Lots of ups and downs and teeny tiny paths that were barely big enough for just one of us.

Hunni had fun in the woods and was pretending to be a little boy again.  He told me all little boys love the woods.  I asked him how old he was and he told me “You are only as young as you feel.”  When I asked him how old he felt he giggled (yes giggled :-D ) and said “5!”  He suggested we could pretend we were on Survivor and use the above conglomeration of tree branches to make our shelter.

Then there was then entire escapade of him wanting to climb in and out of trees.

He finally made it into the tree when this sweet older couple also hiking the trail snuck came up behind us and offered to take a picture of both of us.  There was no way I was scrambling to get my butt up in that tree after watching Hunni try several times to do it himself so they suggested I stand in front of him and got a pretty cute picture.

I look so small.

His climbing and goofing didn’t stop there.  Almost any tree he saw he wanted to climb up.  And he did climb a few more.

So proud.

Almost every tree he climbed he almost fell out of so I asked him to stop.  He insisted on being silly still so he started doing funny stuff like this instead.

Can you see Hunni?

I was more interested in taking pictures of the scenery as Hunni played in it.  Just shows how different we are :-)   But I got some pretty pictures.

I even had fun pretending to Maria in the pretty clearing near the visitors center.  Hunni didn’t understand the composition I was looking for at first and was trying to take a good picture of me.  He got a pretty good one too…good job Hunni.

Soaking up the sun.

And I had to get a pretty pic of the gorgeous flowering bush behind us because it was just so pretty.  I wish I could take this home and put it in my yard.

Reminds me of my grandmas house.

And one of the coolest parts of Mt. Greylock…besides the awesome outdoor views and fun was the visitors center.  Inside they had the all important bathroom after an hour-long hike and a cool exhibit of local photography.  It was some of the coolest nature photography from our area since the 1950′s.  We spent about 30 minutes just staring at how cool some of them were.

Just so many.

So many photos I just couldn’t take pictures of them all but they were amazing and I would have loved to have seen it in real-time.  We will definitely be going back to enjoy the other trails, the main ones didn’t open until 15 May, and look at the pictures again.  Hunni wants to take the pups next time and I’m sure they’ll have a blast. But for now I got to accomplish 11 on my list:-)

Do you have any fun touristy things in your area?

Looks like you guys had fun! What a beautiful hike, and congrats on crossing off another thing on your list :)

We have a lot of hiking trails within about an hour of our area, the closest is Kennesaw Mountain which is also a battlefield from the Civil War. It’s a pretty nice hike, with lots of trails. We also have a famous landmark “The Big Chicken” which is literally a large chicken built around a KFC. LOL http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Chicken
